So Long, 2016!

"Time seemed, as it always does in adulthood after a particular stretch has concluded, no matter how ponderous or unpleasant the stretch was to endure, to have passed quickly indeed." -- Eligible

Books

I set my aims low this year for my book goal and I almost didn't make it. Which is funny because I realise I didn't watch that much tv this year so I suppose it's all those Hallmark movies and all the Gilmore Girls and Good Wife. Nevertheless, it was a good year for books.

Eligible: A Modern Retelling of Pride & Prejudice by Curtis Sittenfeld | The Singles Game by Lauren Weisberger | Scrappy Little Nobody by Anna Kendrick | Modern Lovers by Emma Straub | Losing It by Emma Rathbone | Nine Women, One Dress by Jane L. Rosen | Today Will be Different by Maria Semple | Vinegar Girl by Anne Tyler | The Hopefuls by Jennifer Close | Symptoms of Being Human by Jeff Garvin | The Sound of Gravel by Ruth Wariner | The Love that Split the World by Emily Henry

Movies

I went over my goal of 50 movies but didn't quite reach 100 this time around. And you'd think I would with all that Hallmark TV I consumed. No regrets though, those TV movies are priceless and just so easy to watch and consume. A lot of big budget summer movies

La La Land (Damien Chazelle) | How to be Single (Christian Ditter) | Bridget Jones's Baby (Sharon Maguire) | Train To Busan (Sang-ho Yeon) | Me Before You (Thea Sharrock) | Zootopia (Byron Howard, Rich Moore, Jared Bush) | Doctor Strange (Scott Derrickson) | Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Gareth Edwards) | Star Trek Beyond (Justin Lin) | Captain America: Civil War (Anthony Russo, Joe Russo) | X-Men Apocalypse (Bryan Singer) | Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (David Yates)

Music

I am forever thankful to Spotify + Last.fm for helping me identify my year-end list. My brother still requires us to send him our Top 10 favourite albums of the year so this was a list that I knew would have to happen regardless. The most fun part is seeing my siblings list through the years. It's pretty hilarious.

Mind of Mine by ZAYN | Don't You by Wet | Emotion Side B by Carly Rae Jepsen | Matter by St. Lucia | La La Land (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) by Various Artists | 24K Magic by Bruno Mars | HYMNS by Bloc Party | Love You To Death by Tegan and Sara | i like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it by The 1975 | Dangerous Woman by Ariana Grande | Starboy by The Weekend | Views by Drake

Television

I'll be honest and admit I watched half these shows at the tail end of 2016 when I realised I didn't watch enough shows in 2016. But then I realised, I did a lot of old shows and shit ton of Gilmore Girls in preparation for the revival. And then there was The Good Wife, too. I need more British shows in my life, though.

The Crown (Netflix) | Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life (Netflix) | Berlin Station (Epix) | The Girlfriend Experience (STARZ) | Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories (Netflix) | Class (BBC 3) | Fleabag (BBC 3) | The Night Manager (BBC One) | Designated Survivor (ABC) | The Good Place (NBC) | High Maintenance (HBO) | Search Party (TBS)

Real Life

Quarter 1

January: I hung out with Sayaka and Chris and Rokas way too much and maybe unknowingly stocked up on time together before they'd all come to leave me later on in the year. But January was also me going home for a weekend to support my little sister Paola on her batch's fashion show. Never been more of a proud sister.

February: I turned 29 and celebrated with my siblings. I can't believe I'm on last yer of my 20s. It sounds old but also young in a way. I also learned how to wakeboard. And by learned, I mean very rudimentary standing on the board and not falling flat on my face every single time.

March: We got a visit from Cousin Jay and his friend Carlos and it was nice to be a tourist in Singapore. It was fun to go to the Singapore Jazz Fest and go to hawkers and see the city from a fresh pair of eyes. It was also fun to see Risa and Sayaka together in one city. My two baes together? My mind exploded.

Quarter 2

April: I did my first 5K in forever and it was nice to 'train' for this event even if it was a Snoopy run which means everyone just essentially took photos every 250M. but it was good fun. I also went to my first Singapore wedding of a colleague and it was of course, a good time.

May: My cousin Brian came to visit and it was the most tiring but fun weekend ever. Brian has boundless energy and I found myself to be quite the grandma beside hime. I also said goodbye to Sayaka who finally went to Vietnam to be with Rokas. And to drown my sorrows, I went out with cousins to the top of the National Gallery which was pretty swanky.

June: So of course I immediately booked tickets to Ho Chi Minh to visit Sayaka and it was loads of fun even if it was only for the weekend and even if Sayaka fell sick on the second day of my visit (it wouldn't be sayaka if she didn't get sick). Back in Singapore, Risa was also going to be ending her stay in Singapore so we did a date to the ArtScience museum which I had never been to so it was all fun.

Quarter 3

July: July started out pretty horribly with my grandmother dying at the end of June and so I went home for her funeral. I'm glad I was able to visit her right before she died, too. I'm sad she didn't reach her 90th birthday but she's in a better place now. Though July started out sadly, it ended on a happy note with my brother getting married! It's the first wedding in the family and it was nice to fly in my brothers from the US to surprise our parents for it. A really good and tiring weekend together.

August: More visitors to Singapore in August and this time Koko, Chrissy and Bart came over for the Weezer concert which turned out to be loads of fun even if Im not necessarily the biggest Weezer fan. It was nice to have Koko around. I also ended up going on a slightly spontaneous weekend to Phuket with Kaulin and Becky and Adoni for Becky's birthday which I really needed.

September: I said goodbye to my first job in Singapore and took a trip to Spain and Portugal which was too much fun. I can't even describe how much I want to go back and never leave but then I don't know how I'd survive because I'd just be gawking at everything all the time and not working. Coming back to Singapore was hard but it was nice cause I finally met Marina! Working in regional and never meeting people you work with is tricky but fun.

Quarter 4

October: And during my period of unemployment, I went back to Manila for one of my best friend's Lee-Ann's wedding. It's the first wedding in my really close group of friends so it was nice to see her marry such a good guy. I also got to hang with Paola as she prepared to leave Manila for NYC. I'm going to miss this little monkey and have her so far away.

November: Funnily enough, I started working end of October but I found myself in Manila 2 weekends in a row for really good friends weddings. I also embarked on what was the first series of steady dates with the same guy. Needless to say, it didn't last past November, but it was a lot more dates than I usually get so progress, I suppose. Heartache but progress.

December: And as I wallowed in my self-pity, I was happily distracted by many family things happening in December as well as tons of work that suddenly piled on me. New work is good and I'm learning but I'm also so unsure about everything. I don't know if this is the quarter-life a third of your life crisis but I hope 2017 is much kinder. It's always nice to end the year with family and this time they came over to Singapore which is new and strange but interesting. Tiring, of course but good times.
