Star Trek

The wait is over.[All Movie Photos]
Though I would love to consider myself a geek, I can't say that I am. Sure, I enjoy the occassional Star Wars and Wii-ing, and I do spend a ton of time online, but that's about the extent of my geek-ness. And so when I first heard about the Star Trek movie from my cousin Nikki, I wasn't quite sure whether to get excited or not.

Then I saw the cast and things sort of turned around for me. Chris Pine (whom I've found adorable since The Princess Diaries), Zoe Saldana, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg (Adventures of Tintin here we come!), Anton Yelchin, John Cho, Eric Bana and then I got really psyched. Then at the helm was JJ Abrams from Alias? This has got to be good.

Plus watching with a really big group of cousins (well technically, 5 out of the 9 were my siblings) makes the movie all the more enjoyable. Can anyone spell SEQUEL already?! And I so want to watch this one on IMAX.

And the Critics Say

I like this ship! It's exciting! Photo courtesy of All Movie Photos
Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times said:
The movie deals with narrative housekeeping. Perhaps the next one will engage these characters in a more challenging and devious story, one more about testing their personalities than re-establishing them. In the meantime, you want space opera, you got it.
YES PLEASE. Where is that sequel because now that we've re-established the return of Kirk and company we so need something to follow this one up! One sequel at the least, I say!!! I mean the franchise possibilities are endless, but we need J.J. Abrams at the helm again because he did a fabulous job with this one.

Ray Bennett of The Hollywood Reporter said:
Paced at warp speed with spectacular action sequences rendered brilliantly and with a cast so expert that all the familiar characters are instantly identifiable.
My dad said that the cast was just brilliant in the mannerisms and the way the original cast did Star Trek and he was impressed (my dad being an actual Star Trek fan) so it's really great how they did this update of the movie so freaking well.

Marc Savlov of the Austin Chronicle said:
It's not necessary to be a longtime fan of the Star Trek universe to appreciate the sheer emotional punch and swagger of this rough and randy Enterprise crew.
RIGHT FREAKING ON. The only thing I knew of Star Trek was that my dad loved it and we had a story book version of The Wrath of Khan but other than that I grew up a solid Star Wars kid and so I wasn't expecting anything at all and yet I totally and absolutely loved it so much!!!!

What the Non-Critic Says

Buckle up! Photo courtesy of All Movie Photos
  • Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine): The swagger and humor and just plain cockiness of this guy was so good. When he was sleeping with the green girl and at the same time trying to impress Uhura? Only Kirk! Plus you know that he and Spock are totally going to be BFFs, so it was really awesome to see him try his best to get along with Spock for the Enterprise. Also, I don't know why I was near tears in the starting with his parents. I'm such an easy target.

  • Spock (Zachary Quinto): This guy was just born to play Spock and I love how he totally imbibed the character. But the character itself was such a cutie!!! I don't know if Spock was intended to be that adorable because that's how he came off for me, really sweet. As a child, he was so cute with the bullies and then with his 'mom' Winona Ryder (so random). But really, every time Spock came on the scene, I wanted to give him a hug.

  • Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (Karl Urban): My dad said that McCoy was the most dead on from everyone and though I cannot verify, I loved McCoy. Nikki's personal favorite, I totally understand. He's such a sweet friend to Kirk. I was laughing so hard when he durgged Kirk to get him on the Enterprise. Only a friend would do that.

  • Nyota Uhura (Zoe Saldana): God I love Zoe Saldana so much!!! She was so gorgeous and everytime she would go near Spock, I died. They are the cutest thing ever and must make lots and lots of quarter-Vulcan, 3/4 human babies now. It doesn't hurt that she looked really good in the uniform too.

  • Montgomery "Scotty" Scott (Simon Pegg): I LOVE THIS MAN!!!! When Spock and Kirk found him in that cold planet and he was sleeping and not working and just being adorable, I felt like I was transported to a Simon Pegg film. Then when he got on the ship and said that he liked it, it totally broke the tension.

  • Hikaru Sulu (John Cho): Harold knows fencing!!!! So fencing is his idea of hand-to-hand combat. I thought it was cute how he couldn't start the ship at first and then his parachute got blown off. Just totally adorable guy. Let's go to White Castle now!

  • Pavel Chekov (Anton Yelchin): I love Anton Yelchin so it was really cute to see him with the exaggerated accent! And he's so smart too. He and Spock could totally do a showdown of smartness though Spock would probably win but I'm sure Chekov could give him a run for his money.

  • Nero (Eric Bana): WHAT A WASTE OF PERFECTLY HOT ACTOR. I feel this was like Rodrigo Santoro as Xerxes in 300 because you know Eric Bana is a hottie. WHy cast him in the ugly bad guy role? Oh well, I was pretty scared of the dude, so I guess mission accomplished.

  • The score, CGI, effects and set design was so solid. This movie was just A+++ in my book and I'm not even a fan. Maybe because I'm not a fan, I appreciated it. But either way, I'm really hoping for a sequel to this one because you just can't leave us with just ONE FILM?!? Come on JJ, give me the sequel to the prequel!
