American Idol 8: Top 11 (Jesus Take The Mics)

Kick Them Girls Out[Rickey]
Lord why do we still have Country week? I have to say that last year's country week was surprising with the sexiness that was Michael Johns and the haircut of David Cook and everyone's surprisingly good performances so I'm having sort of high-ish hopes for this year. Bring it Idols!

And well, I guess they sort of brung it. I definitely had my favorites but still not a knock out blow me away show. Then again, how many times have I been really blown away this season? Not a lot. This season sort of needs to step things up for me.

Still, I won't complain as the boy:girl ratio is getting more agreeable to me. Thanks to this year's non-quota of equal amount of boys and girls, the boys are outnumbering the girls by this many and I've never been this happy. What can I say? I'm a girl.

And so we open with the somewhat loveable Michael Sarver who is supposedly into country music. Thing is, his take on Ain't Going Down 'Till The Sun Comes Up is better seen than heard. Reminiscent of Chikezie with the token banjo player (and in this case harmonica), I felt more entertained by his back-up player than him. Though I should give him props for looking very comfortable on stage and singing those tongue twisting lyrics. Nevertheless, I did not enjoy.

I know she's not exactly the contestant with the most fans, but for some reason, Allison Iraheta has been really impressing me week after week and this week's Blame it On Your Heart was not an exception. She made me really bob my head and enjoy her performance!!! The thing is, I don't think this girl is even a country singer and yet she totally brought it with her rendition. She felt so much more confident and her voice. God her voice. I want to sound like this girl. I also still want her hair color.

Mr. I'm Not Just A Pretty Face, Kris Allen totally brings it this week with his To Make You Feel My Love. No really. Haterz to the left because boy has got the skillz. And those skillz are making me want to plot ways to kill the wife. Seriously. Boy you are 23! What are you doing married?!?! I know there are a lot of successful young marriages there, but do you want to win this thing?!?

I know I'm mean. And I'm sure his wife is somewhere in the audience heavily guarded from the rabid fangirls who want to eliminate her, but I'm hoping this performance keeps him from being eliminated because boy is good. I mean really really good. I mean who cares if he's pretty good. yes, that good.

I'm still waiting for Lil Rounds to knock me off my feet. Because her Independence Day wasn't really much. She just does nothing to me. No doubt she can sing. I don't think there was a note out of tune there but while watching her, I just felt no connection. It felt very robotic. Very practiced. That can be a good thing, but I just felt no spark or life.

If it's worth anything, Adam Lambert knows how to make some noise. And his strangely tantric take on Reign of Fire definitely brought the entertainment value to the show. Only Adam Lambert can pull off something this far out and he did it with his usual brand of flair and sauciness. That didn't even sound like country anymore and for that I applaud him.

I do not understand why he's still here, but Scott MacIntyre and his just okay version of Wild Angels really makes me wonder why Jamar is not in the competition instead. I mean vocally he has it-ish, but not really. Not blow me out of the water vocals. He needs to really really step step step it up.

Brooke did it last year and I wasn't very impressed. Alexis Grace does her version of Jolene and though it's not horrible, it's not Dirty-Diana-esque either. It just felt very boring and very safe for her. I mean she did her own spin on it, but it wasn't like it was such a big risk.

Why do people sing this song?! I know Carrie sang it, but come on Danny Gokey. Was there no other song than Jesus Take the Wheel? I think this song was meant for Carrie and people should take their hands off it. And still Danny doesn't do such a bad job. Vocally it was good, but I know he can do waaaaay better than this. Bring back some of that PYT!

Thank freaking god that Anoop Desai FINALLY made the right song choice. His stellar Always on My Mind shows them haters/doubters that there is in fact a voice to this charming boy. This guy can sing and he chose a good week to prove it. I love this song and the way he did it was just uh-mazing. Anoop should do more songs like this cause this kind of Anoop makes me happy.

So she's sick. Megan Corkrey and her vocal stylings somehow do not impress me the way Kellie Pickler did with Walking After Midnight. Then again, maybe it was because Kellie was so bad before her take on this song that it was a welcome change. Though because of Megan's unique tone, any song sounds different and that works for her. Her jerky choreography though still has not won me over this week.

Coming from last week's high, Matt Giraud manages to stay afloat though a smidgen down. His So Small was actually really good. That totally didn't feel like country to me just because he made it his own. When Matt plays the piano, my hair stands on end. He's obviously at home at the piano and his rendition of the song was just wow.

And though this week wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, I'm still waiting for the Idols to blow me away. Really. I had an easy time ranking them this week just because the performances were obvious. I want to have a hard time ranking because they're all so good.

Dial Idol predicts an Alexis Grace going away. I prefer Michael Sarver to go. So far though, Dial Idol has been pretty spot on, so that'll be something to look forward to.
