American Idol 8 Top 36 (Round 3): Call This Show If You Can't Be Without Them

Least Exciting[Rickey]
I'm really feeling bad about how the three groups were divided just because by the time I got to Round 3, I just wasn't really supporting anyone anymore. Sure, Alex is a cutie and Scott was here, but there wasn't anyone who I NEEDED in the Top 12 or I'd freak out by the television.

In fact, I could kick out this entire group and not really give a crap, just because no one really really stood out for me. No one had me praying to the Idol Gods that they would enter the Top 12, because it was just so blah.

They should have just removed all twelve and then did the usual Top 24 wherein we'd get three performances per contestant. But no, instead we get an even more underwhelming night -- which after last week, I really didn't think was possible. But for these Idol hopefuls. Impossible is nothing, because they were possibly the most boring group ever.

You know things are bad when by the end of the show you realize that the first person who performed was actually the best. For me at least. I'm no Von Smith fan. In fact, I distinctly remember wanting to stuff his mouth with something just to shut him up. And well, he sort of listened. Because with his very restrained You're All I Need To Get By, I found myself really really enjoying this. He's actually good when he's not opening his mouth so wide I can see what he had for lunch.

With a high comes a low though. I wasn't ever Taylor Vaifanua's fan either, but unlike Von, she didn't do anything to prove me wrong. Her take on If I Ain't Got You was just too low for her voice. I hate to say this but Syesha pwned her on this one and I didnt' like Syesha much either last year.

I don't know if Alex Wagner-Trugman's cuteness can take him very far with his I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues. The moves were just distracting and though he has a great tone, the growling became a bit much. Too bad, cause he's cute.

Speaking of too much, the girl who refuses to be cute-as-a-button, Arianna Afsar sung waaay too much on her The Winner Takes It All. The song had a great melody already and she put a vibrato on every single line. Her affectations would have been okay like twice, but she went waaaay overboard. Still, she can sing, so it wasn't so bad.

Then in comes Ju'Not Joyner trying to prove me wrong. And he sort of did. Sort of because though his uniqe-er take on Hey There Delilah was good, it was boring me to death. He's got a great voice and he made it his own, but stage presence is important too. And to tell the truth, he's just not hot enough to do the so-so show. Bring it, boy!

And another girl I wasn't really fond of, Kristen McNamara somehow gets me to like her. I'm never a fan of the girls, most especially Kristen, but her Give Me One Reason was a great choice. She had a great interpretation of it and though she flubbed that last note and is confused with her image, she was one of the few that actually entertained me tonight.

As for tonight's requisite clown, Nathaniel Marshall does not have Tatiana's pipes or Nick Mitchell's comedic skills, which would leave him with nothing. Added to that, he chose I Would Do Anything For Love, the most baffling song choice ever. The fast-then-slow-then-fast-then-slow song did not do him any favors.

I no longer wonder why Felicia Barton didn't make it to the Top 36 the first time around. Somewhere in the USA, the girl Barton replaced, Joanna Pacitti is probably trying to kill herself. No One was the better Alicia Keys song choice, I believe and yet she totally butchered it. Good start. Horrific Middle. Salvage-able ending.

For some reason, I'm not feeling Scott MacIntyre at all. I thought his performance was mediocre at best and the song Mandolin Rain was just confusing. Was there NO OTHER song to entertain me with? It was inconsistent. Sometimes it was bearable, most of the time though, just blah. Okay, bring on the heckles. I'm just not Team Scott right now.

I'm not even a country fan and yet Kendall Beard didn't completely turn me off with her This One's For the Girls. I'm still not a country girl, but I thought she was cute and she pulled it off well. Do I want her in the Top 12? Not really.

And the best surprise of the night was Jorge Nunez. Accent or no accent, boy has pipes that he uses well. He's got great control of it and he hit every note of Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me. I know Pamy is still solid in her devotion to Archie's version, but I really really liked this one.

Finally, though I'm not a Lil Rounds fan much, I felt she was short-changed. Sure, she got the pimp spot, but unlike the past two weeks, she didn't get the pimp lighting, camera handling or even Paula's seal clap. Still her Be Without You did get her Simon's 'brilliant' comment and a great outfit to go with it. Girl looked fierce! Still, I prefer Season 5's Paris Bennett's version.

For some reason Dial Idol seems to predict a Scott-Lil-Ju'Not victory. I'm just not feeling Scott. I think Von or Jorge deserve his spot more. In my dream world, Von, Alex and Jorge would get in. But then again, it's just my dream world.
