American Idol 8 Top 36 (Round 1): Waiting to Recover from the First Night Fright!

Really, Round 1?![Rickey]
Am I supposed to forgive Idol for producing the most technically-glitch-filled episode ever?! As PB put it, is this what the recession has done?! A sub-standard showing of the Top 36? I know it's the "first" night of live television, but this is also their 8th first live show and you'd think they'd do better by now.

Now see, I don't mind if the technical director keeps cutting to a scene of some dark passageway, as if trying to tell me to stop watching and get the hell out or if they keep showing shots of the awkward after-performance hug from friends and parents -- of from the back. What I do mind is when even the performers were all having their own glitches!

People, this is the Top 36 and you've got ONE chance of making an impression. Either you nail it or you don't. You're all competing for THREE-four slots and seriously, you're making this a very easy decision for America. Even the best ones took some sort of tumble. To think I had high hopes for this first round. I guess not.

So we start out the show with Jackie Tohn's rendition of "A Little Less Conversation" and though I was trying to stay optimistic, it just felt sort of wrong. I appreciate her trying to give it 'her own spin' but her vocals were just alright. I wasn't blown away. I was entertained by her crazy antics and her skintight 'trousers' but when the judges start mentioning your personality instead of your voice, you know you're in trouble.

Thank god Ricky Braddy was up next because despite not being shown AT ALL in the previous weeks, this guy actually has some talent. And it shows with his take on "A Song For You". Elliott's done this before and I don't think anyone could do it justice after that, but Ricky proved us wrong. I feel terrible because this guy had absolutely NO exposure which means very little votes -- pity or otherwise. But they shouldn't pity him because he actually has the pipes to sing. So what if he's shy? He can overcome that. At least he can sing. This is a singing competition after all. And his parents were my favorites. They had the best shirts on.

Maybe I'm just not that into her song, but Alexis Grace was just alright for me. swikey texted me before watching the show telling me that Alexis had a very KStew vibe to her and I guess her minidress + mary jane heels did the trick. But other than the Girl Crush I have on her (Alexis) and her good vocals, she just didn't do it for me. Perhaps another song next time? Because her performance of "I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You)" just lacked 'oomph.'

I unfortunately have nothing really good to say about Brent Keith's take on "Hicktown" other than I felt like I was in IckTown. I know, corny, but that's what his performance was for me.

As if one bad performance wasn't enough, we get a back-to-back treat with Stevie Wrong Wright's massacre on "You Belong With Me". I'm not even a Taylor Swift fan but I'm sure this girl pretty much just packed her bags with that one.

And still, despite that dismal performance, I was expecting to be blown away by next contender, Anoop Desai. But I just wasn't bowled over. I'm sorry Pamy, I know my expectations are too high. But I just wanted to feel like I did with Elliott when he sang, "If You Really Love Me" or "Moody's Mood" -- those were great performances. Anoop's "Angel of Mine" was the WORST SONG CHOICE ever for him. Was there NO OTHER song left?!

This totally breaks my heart because everyone knows how much I LOVE Anoop. He's likeable and talented. So it sucks that his amazing talent didn't shine through this time. And it's not like he gets a second chance next week. It's literally now or never -- or at least 'til Wild Card (and unfortunately I think Ricky deserves it more). So is this the end of the line for Anoop? I hope for Pamy's sake, that it isn't.

Halfway through the show and I still haven't gotten that 'OMG' moment in the show and obviously, Casey Carlson wasn't going to give it to me. I gotta give it to her. She knows how to get the boys all hot and bothered. There was a surprising amount of boys in the sala as we watched. But her "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" was far from magical and she better hope she's got some magic trick up her sleeve, cause that was bad horrible.

It really really pays to be nice. And Michael Sarver is just that. I liked his version of "I Don't Wanna Be" though it wasn't his best. As an individual, it wasn't horrendous, but when you stack everyone up, he just comes out in the middle and that isn't good. I know he can do better, but do I think he deserves a spot in the Top 12? Perhaps if he was in another round.

And so we get down to our final 2 boys and girls and Anne Marie Boskovich does her very weak "(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman" which is really pretty much suicide considering Kelly Clarkson did a great version of it. And no, Anne Marie, the sexy factor isn't that high to help you through -- or so I hope.

I was hoping that Stephen Fowler would change my mind about him. His "Rock with You" started out rough, got okay and then just ended okay. I don't think it was as bad as the judges made it out to be, but it just wasn't enough for me to change my mind. Jamar should have been in your place, mofo!

Biggest revelation of the evening belongs to Tatiana Del Toro though. She claims that she isn't exactly like she was in Hollywood week. And I really want to believe her. Because without all the shrieking and crying and laughing and giggling, this girl has got talent that is noticeable if she sticks to singing and not making a fool of herself.

What's amazing about Tatiana is how her talent this week overshadowed any preconceived notions I had about her. I knew she could sing, but I never paid attention because she was too annoying But this week, with the very difficult mistress-anthem "Saving All My Love For You", Tatiana proved that she's there for a reason other than ratings. I hope she stays demure, really. Shut up judges, I prefer her this way I'm begging her to stay this way.

And finally, pimp spot rightfully goes to this season's most beloved widow, Danny Gokey. All this love for him isn't exactly unwarranted. I'm just worried that the tides will change and he'll be thrown under the bus like another early favorite last year. So while he's the chosen one, let's make a checklist of things I expected and if Danny delivered.

Song choice? check. "Hero" is one sappy song, but he managed to not make me squirm through it and instead get enthralled by his vocals. Mention of his wife? check. Boy cannot stop doing this, but okay, I'll let it slide. Elliott moment? Check. There was that second there where Pamy thought this was the vengeance for Elliott's top 3 kick out. Glory Note/Growl note? Check. Elliott Downey Jr. can't help himself but he utilized his growl well. The 3C's: Comfort, Charisma and Confidence on stage? Check. Check. Check.

Token Jamar appearance? Check. BFF was there to support him through it. Paula's seal clap? Check. The judges love this guy. Simon's sobering comment? Check. But right, you can't praise the guy too much lest the backlash happen so soon.

In my dream world, Danny, Anoop and Tatiana would get in (yes Tatiana makes it) with Ricky getting the Wild Card vote. But alas, my recapping the show doesn't mean I can actually vote (as always) and so I am left helpless and at the mercy of the voters.

In 6 hours, I find out who gets into the Top 12 and I'm really crossing my fingers that they get it right. Let's see if Dial Idol is going to get things right this season.
