What Are Friends For? Power and Pain

FOR adults, romances are variable, and friendship is the constant. Privileged Youth reverses the equation: Love affairs are constant, and it’s the friendships that vary.

And matter most.

That is the essence of “Gossip Girl,” a semisatirical portrait of power and privilege in the private schools and penthouses of New York’s ultra rich. It is often said that Hollywood is “high school with money.” On this glossy, glamour-soaked CW series, high school is better than Hollywood.

NY times article on female friendships in the context of GG, the hills and real housewives of NY. it's an interesting read!

Summer is fast approaching
May 14th, 2008

Summer is fast approaching. Luckily for us, there’s just one big event left before we can slip into our bikinis, lather on the SPF and atone for our sins from this past year. Lily and Bart’s wedding will surely be the event of the year (if not the century). Can’t wait to see who shows up. We’re sure things won’t go off without a hitch. I mean, hello this is the Upper East Side after all. When does anything go smoothly?

OMG! The wedding is only days away.
May 16th, 2008

OMG! The wedding is only days away. If you haven’t already checked out Lily’s wedding site you should. There are new videos on it where you can get a sneak peak at the wedding of the season. Also, Lily keeps updating her blog (don’t be too hard on her, at least she’s trying lol. But really there’s only room for one queen of blogging on the UES and that’s moi). And if you haven’t signed the guestbook do it! I’m sure Lily would greatly appreciate it.

HAHA! They sure are wanting you to see the site. LOL

hierophant

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for May 18, 2008 is:

hierophant • \HYE-uh-ruh-fant\  • noun
1 : a priest in ancient Greece; specifically : the chief priest of the Eleusinian mysteries 2 *a : a person who explains : commentatorb : a person who defends or maintains a cause or proposal : advocate

Example sentence:
"Very few women can be coerced into spending $4,000 for green leather trousers embroidered with silver petals . . . simply because some fashion hierophant declares it a trend." (Cathy Horyn, The New York Times, March 30, 1999)

Did you know?
"Hierophant," "hieroglyphics," and "hierarch" have a common root: "hieros," a Greek word meaning "sacred." "Hieroglyphics" joins "hieros" with a derivative of "glyphein," the Greek verb for "carve." "Hierarch," a word that can refer to a religious leader in a position of authority, joins "hieros" with a derivative of "archein," meaning "to rule." "Hierophant" itself joins the root with a derivative of "phainein," which means "to show." The original hierophants were priests of the ancient Greek city of Eleusis who performed sacred rites. In the 17th century, when the word was first documented in English, it referred to these priests. By the 19th century, English speakers were using the term in a broader sense. A "hierophant" can now be a spokesperson, a commentator, an interpreter, or a leading advocate.

*Indicates the sense illustrated in the example sentence.
