American Idol 8: Top 13 (Cause It's Jacko's Night, and We're Feeling Right)

Lucky 13[Rickey]
I'm still reeling. I honestly don't know how I'm going to rank the Idols tonight -- not cause they were so bad -- but because for some reason, I thought there were actually a lot of pretty good performances.

I was expecting pretty much a bloodshed and a total desecration of all things Jacko, but these Idols actually seem like they want to win this thing. Well most of them at least. And that sort of made me happy that I watched.

And was it just me or did the judges totally overpimp some undeserving ones while throwing others under the bus? Oh what am I talking about, it's always this way with Idol anyway!

One thing's for sure, I am so happy there are more boys than girls this season. And I know they just added one more contestant, but they seem so plenty this year!

The thing with Lil Rounds is that she's good. We know that. Performing first with The Way You Make Me Feel was a great way to start the show. She was comfy and owned the stage, but by the time the show ended, I sort of forgot her performance cause of all the others. That isn't a very good sign. To think this is one of my favoritest songs ever (thanks to Center Stage) and yet she didn't have me on my feet. It lacked life, sure she was belting, but it just didn't feel enough. Still, definitely good.

Hearing Scott MacIntyre play the piano was great. It showed me Scott in his element. And on his own, his Keep The Faith was pretty moving. He was really connecting to the song and it was pretty emotional. But again, compared to the rest, his performance paled. Still, a good performance.

Dammit Gokey! You know how to make my hair stand on end. Seriously. I don't want to go all gaga over Danny Gokey but I have to say that THIS was the best performance of the night. P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) isn't my favorite MJ song, but Danny freaking made me love it. His vocals were perfect and he just BROUGHT IT. His growls and his stage presence were just so spot on. I was dancing on the inside and just really really in awe with his performance. He felt like he was on a league of his own. I'm still floored thinking about it.

I feel bad for Michael Sarver cause he came right after Gokey. But in fairness to him, he sort of still stood out with his take on You Are Not Alone. Not my favorite Jacko song and well it felt sort of blah after Gokey, but his vocals were impressive. Still, there was no WOW, blow me away factor. He's just a nice guy who can sing really well. But is it enough? I don't know. His kid wearing a 'vote for my daddy' shirt is cute though.

Of ALL THE SONGS, Jasmine Murray had to choose the most boring, most cliche song ever. I'll Be There?! Really Jasmine. Way to break out of your box. You're 17 and it shows with your safe song choices. Yes, you can sing. Yes you have a good control of your voice, but you're also very boring. I'm sad they had to put her through to this round because I could really have done without her.

Meanwhile, the apparently married Kris Allen continues to make my panties drop. For the first time, the Dawg Randy actually made a correct comparison. The very Mraz-ian take on Do You Remember the Time was so fun to watch and actually really pleasant to listen to. This song has a stigma in my head cause I saw the video and was just not impressed but when Kris sang it, he made it so current and something I want to listen to all the time. It's on repeat as we speak.

I'm never a fan of the rocker chicks, but for some reason when Allison Iraheta opened her mouth, I actually listened. The tone of her voice is crazy. Now this is the minor we should be paying attention to. Her Give In To Me didn't even sound like a Jacko song anymore! Her voice is so mature it's crazy! I mean I'm not going to be raising her flag or anything but she really impressed me with this. It felt genuine and wow.

Oh boy. Anoop Desai, you know I've been rooting for you (for Pamy's sake) and well cause you're really likeable. So please try to make better song choices. Because Beat It just wasn't the right song. And yet because of my strong like for you, I'm going to say that I was still sort of entertained and your jacket was hot. But please, let's prove the haters wrong and be better next week, okay? Like waaaaaay better. Thing is, it wasn't as bad as the judges made it out to be, but it was not stellar either. And at this point Anoop, you gotta be bringing it every single time.

Everyone seems to be hating on Jorge Nunez and his old school song Never Can Say Goodbye, but I actually enjoyed it. It was different from what I'd normally hear from Jorge. And Kara if he sang She's Out Of My Life, I know it would have been good, but it would have also been pretty freaking cliche of Jorge. His performance was smooth and suave and showed he can do something other than power ballads.

And though I've never been Miss Megan Corkrey's biggest fan, I actually didn't despite her Rocking Robin this week. It felt like she was singing to her really cute kid. Maybe because they kept all her shots to a MCU thus not showing her dance moves. But I liked that she chose an odd song. And though it wasn't the best of the night, I really somehow enjoyed it. So weird!!! Okay so the last note was indulgent and the judges shouldn't be liking her this much, but oh well.

Then we go to the chosen one, Mr. Adam Lambert. I've been on the fence on this guy cause he has this tendency to go OVER THE TOP all the time and sometimes it works, but sometimes it doesn't. This boy could roll on the floor and scream and the judges would love him. I felt like the first half of Black Or White was good, the second half was just a scream fest to me. It was enjoyable and yes entertaining. And definitely the most comfortable onstage, but it felt a little manic at times and I was afraid he was going to go into cardiac arrest.

And after that manic attack, we get Mr. Smooth, Matt Giraud. Boy knows how to choose his songs. I'm not a fan of Human Nature, but his piano playing gets to me every time. And the fact that he wasn't yelling like others and just earnestly singing wins points in my book. His riffs and his calm demeanor without ever becoming boring was fabulous.

It wasn't as good as she thought it was. I agree with Simon on this. But I applaud Alexis Grace for totally going all out with her Dirty Diana and out of her comfort zone. Another unusual song choice but it worked for her. Unfortunately, the first half was also better than the second as the last part was just her wailing mostly, but I'll say that she was definitely different. And that matters.

And so tomorrow, as they kick out two people, I'm kinda scared how the new 'twist' is going to go. Supposedly, the judges have some sort of meddling power and though that's a good thing-ish, it's not like this isn't rigged to begin with right?

Dial Idol says Anoop is safe and that should keep Pamy happy, but it'll be a shame to see Jorge and Allison go so soon when they weren't the worst tonight. Oh well, watch the Idol wheel turn.
