American Idol 8 Top 36 (Round 2): And I'm Telling You, Most of Them Should Be Going Home

Mediocre at Best[Rickey]
I don't even know how to describe the mediocrity of this week's round of 12. Sure, this week we improved technically. There were no more camera glitches or annoying, awkward post-performance family pow-wows in the Coke Red Room, but my goodness, where did the talent go? I miss you, talent.

It's not like I was having the highest of expectations, but for some reason, I only really paid attention to three performances and one of those was of Nick/Norman -- which technically shouldn't count. I'm still confused as to what to do with him/it/whatever.

So why am I not being bowled over?! Wasn't the former Top 24 where I got wowed by the likes of Elliott Yamin's Moody's Mood For Love or Blake Lewis's Somewhere Only We Know and must I even mention David Cook's Hello or David Archuleta's Imagine? So people, you have no excuse! Where is the talent!?!

So Jasmine Murray starts off the show with her take on the very 'current' Sara Barreiles hit Love Song and I love this song. I also LOOOOVE Jasmine. Technically, I should love this performance. And yet, it's just aight for me. I'm not hating it, she does put in a lot of riffs, but I would have preferred she chose another song.

I try not to get too crushed as Matt Giraud is up next and his Georgia on My Mind from Hollywood is still in my head. But somehow, the risky choice of Viva La Vida just didn't work for me as well as it should have. His voice was breathy and in the part where he says, "For some reason I can't explain" I think he lost his voice completely. I feel bad for him, cause I want him to get into the top 12.

But then comes Jeanine Vailes and now I'm really pissed. Cause I have never heard this woman and I'm thinking maybe she'll Ricky Braddy-impress me, but no. She does the most WTF performance of This Love which Blake did and pulled off and yet this girl has reduced the judges to a "Great Legs" comment. What is she even doing in the Top 36?! And why isn't she a boy so that Jamar could be in her place instead?!

I've got to give it to Nick Mitchel/Norman Gentle. Yes, this guy is confusing as hell and his voice wasn't as good as it could have been with his nth singing of And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going, but at least I was entertained. And for the first time this episode, I actually really watched. Unfortunately, I don't know how far he can do this trick or how he'll be packaged if he goes any further. Still, there was effort, and that counts.

I don't usually root for the emo-rock kiddies, but somehow on a night like this, Allison Iraheta is starting to give me a little more hope. Her take on Alone was far from perfect, but a far cry from what I've heard so far. She brought it with the performance and her voice was actually pretty solid. But then Randy brings out the "16 years old" trump card and Paula brings out the "telephone book" comments and I'm sort of on the fence again. I do like your hair though.

I was about to dismiss Kris Allen as a mere pretty boy that I wouldn't mind staring at, so it's just apt that his song was Man in the Mirror, because yes, I would love to gaze at your reflection. Surprisingly, he was actually pretty freaking good. There is after all a voice behind the face. The judges seemed to like him which makes me feel bad because I don't think he's got enough votes his way -- so way to give the poor guy hope.

I know that Megan Corkrey's voice is good, but I don't know if she was THAT good?! I officially want to ban Put Your Records On from being sung on Idol ever, just cause I heard it too much during auditions. And Megan has a funny way of moving. Yes, she's pretty, but honey, it was so awkward with her hippie hippie shake shake thing onstage. And the tights? I'm not so sure. I prefer the audition Megan.

Does Matt Brietzke have any fans? Cause we already let the Michael Sarver through and I don't know if Matt's performance of If You Can Only See can get him in. As they all said, he's a nice guy, but that song was just boring to the nth level. It made him look old -- even older than Kai, who's song was the oldest, possibly. His performance was just so dated and just not interesting to me.

During the sing-off, I didn't want Jesse Langseth to get in, cause I preferred Frankie Jordan. But with tonight's Bette Davis Eyes, I actually sort of dug her. I'm not going to be raising her flag or anything, but 9 performances in and I'm still not impressed by anyone, and then Jesse comes in looking a bit like Fiona Apple (not sounding like her though) to me and she wasn't half as bad. Plus I like her song and she made me listen -- which is apparently my only standard for tonight's horrible-level performances.

But what really breaks my heart is that Kai Kalama had an even worse song choice than Anoop last week. Kai did his 'best' with What Becomes of the Broken Hearted which is probably older than his mother whom he always dedicates things to and the song's age shone through because I was just bored off my rocker. Never mind that Kai was actually breaking out of his shell with his performance but the song just ruined it for me. It pains me to see him go, cause I still love his audition. Looks like that's all I'm going to get from him.

I never really paid much attention to Mishavonna Henson and after tonight's performance of Drops of Jupiter, I don't think I still will. She's a cute girl and the tone of her voice is pretty good, but she just didn't make me want to listen to her. And I love Train's take on this. Why are people choosing the most horrible song choices ever?! Were there NO other songs at all?! Did they listen to themselves sing OTHER songs and realize those were a) better; b) less morose; c) could actually give them a shot at winning?

DISCLAIMER: Before anything else, I so DO NOT agree with Randy with his comment on Adam Lambert referring to him as "a mix of Mick Jagger plus Fall Out Boy plus Robert Pattinson from Twilight." Does every mention of Rob or Twilight give Twi-moms a reason to tune in and thus a ratings boost? I truly don't understand where the hell that came from and don't even want to analyze why Randy uttered that. He's been drinking from Paula's cup.

Nevertheless, the boy with the flat-ironed hair took the pimp spot, the pimp lights, and the seal clap to take tonight's "top spot" with his performance of Satisfaction. I've never been a Lambert fan, and tonight didn't really sway me to cheer his camp on, but I've got to give it to him for being the best for me tonight. That isn't saying much relative to his competition.

Still, he brought his game on. Chose a great song and performed the crap out of it. It was shades of Von Smith screechy mcshouters at times, but nothing to be disgusted by. This guy's got the confidence, and I'm sure the fan base. If he doesn't sail through to the next round, something fishy is going on.

If only Kai and Matt G gave waaay better performances, I would totally wish them into the Top 12, but unfortunately, they didn't bring their game on tonight. And if Dial Idol is to be trusted (like last week), then we'll see an Adam, Allison, Matt G trio in the Top 12. At this point, I could really care less who got in. But hey, throw in some Kris Allen and you know I won't be complaining.
