American Idol: Top 24 Boys (60's Night)

I've been so busy with school, I haven't gotten the time to get excited over Idol. Really. I feel terrible that I can't even get time to get all giddy over it. Still, I'm glad I was still able to catch the last showing of it.

I'm glad to see Paula, Randy and Simon back. And of course my Ryan! Seriously, I have no attachment to the contestants this year (save for David A and Ramiele -- thanks to their Pinoy connections) so I'm going to try and get more into it. Let's see if the guys change my mind.

  • David Hernandez - "Midnight Hour" (Wilson Picket) 8
Awww. What a sob story? He sings from his soul? Umm as opposed to singing from where? He looks okay. In fairness to him, he opened on a pretty good note. I'm not familiar with the song, but he pretty much nailed this song. A little dead, performance wise, but I'm not going to kick him out just yet.

  • Chikezie Eze - "I Love You More Today Than Yesterday" (Spiral Staircase) 6
He could have started off better, but it wasn't like he was completely off tune? Or was it because it's a different arrangement? The orange suit grows on you the more you watch it and so does his arrangement of the song. He's got more charisma than David H for sure. Glory note at the end. So fine. Uh huh, Paula... He lost a lot of weight? Ok. Whatevs.

  • David Cook - "Happy Together" (The Turtles) 10
I feel bad for this guy. Because of my hatred for Chris Daughtry last season, I'm already angry at him for being the "rawker." Everyone seems to be "making the songs their own." But alas I've heard better re-makes of this song. So David didn't really prove me wrong. Still, it wasn't repulsive. I just don't care about him enough to hate him. For now.

  • Jason Yeager - "Moon River" (Audrey Hepburn) 5
Aww. yet another slightly sob story. The son-inspiration route. I'm not the biggest fan of this song, so boo for him already. But the voice saved him. This song is a "classic" but it's sooooooooo boring. Trying to insert a glory note here and there, but again the voice saves him. But what can you really do to this song?!? Thank god I didn't fall asleep. Great voice. Boring song. Good effort pare.

Paula? Who the fuck cares?!? And here goes Jason jumping onto the "emotional bandwagon" as jamypye said. 'Dependable old dog?' Maybe so. Simon could have a point there. Randy should just shut up.

  • Robbie Carico - "One Is The Loneliest Number" (Three Dog Night) 11
Robbie. Meet the Razor. It's called basic cleanliness. I don't care if you toured with Britney (not exactly our model for hygiene). So another rawker onstage. I'm so distracted b his bandana, I couldn't care to listen. Brooke beside the stage looks like she's being forced to dance. Ugh. Do I have to watch this? I have this feeling that if he cleaned up, he'll look waaay better.

  • David Archuleta - "Shop Around" (Smokey Robinson & The Miracles) 2
So this guy is a cutie. His voice is funny. His speaking voice is muffled, but hey this ain't an oration. Good energy little boy! I thought he was pretty comfortable on stage. His song had enough pep and wasn't overused when it comes to 60s songs, so there isn't much to compare to which is a good thing. He genuinely looked like he enjoyed himself and then there's the voice. I don't want to pull the he's just 17 years old card, but I will for this performance. I'm pretty impressed (cause he's 17). I'll try not to pull this card out often.

But dude, I want to squish him. See! Randy pulled the 17 year old card too! He's just too cute. I want to give him a hug and kiss in a non sexual way. More like a teddy bear/little brother way. So Paula forgets how old he is. SIMON! Thank you for that comment. I will grant you any sexual favors you ask for. Awww. David so cute. DRYAN forever!!!

  • Danny Noriega - "Jailhouse Rock" (Elvis Presley) 7
I just love this boy/girl. He's so fab! Looking at him just makes me want to bring out my inner diva. I want his hair! His expressions are so fab! So Jon Peter Lewis and Taylor Hicks did this. And I know this isn't a very good song for showing off your vocal prowess, so I wasn't expecting much and well, I didn't get much. He definitely performed his butt off, but it wasn't something to win me over. I love how he keeps rolling his eyes though. And he's feisty without being annoying.

  • Luke Menard - "Everybody's Talking" (Fred Neil) 12
That's the hottest carpet cleaner I've ever seen. He looks like an Orlando Bloom type and I feel terrible that he got kicked out in season 6. WHAT?!?! Did he just say WIFE?!?! His first notes are being drowned by the instrumentals. But then they got to a close up of his face and I DIE. Profile is perfect. Mid shot is hot. This man was made to be shown on TV. Or in pictures. At least. Where did he even get this song? Were there only 24 songs to choose from and this was the only one left?!?

But fine. Let's go squee over his face. And then there was that last note. Goodbye Rudy Cardenas, I mean Luke. Too bad. But that smile is lovely. Simon is right. It was forgettable. I really pray he isn't the Rudy. I love your confidence, but dude, just shut up and agree with the judges. With Simon's comment back at him, people surely won't forget him.

  • Colton Berry - "Suspicious Minds" (Elvis Presley) 4
He doesn't only look like Ellen, but he dresses up like Ellen too (or at least from his auditions). I LOVE THIS SONG. JD Fortune did a version on Rockstar and fell in love with him. Chris Daughtry did this and I hated him more. Colton didn't totally fuck it up nor did he make it his own, but over all I pretty much enjoyed it. His performance was just right. He didn't overdo it and he kept my attention. Go Ellen!

  • Garrett Haley - "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do" (Neil Sedaka) 3
So I wasn't rooting for him to begin with, and the hair is distracting, but he's got a great sense of humor, so snaps for him. Dude, the hair is sooo misleading. When I heard the first few piano notes playing, my heart melted. I love how he's not going the "rawker" route when his image is soooo rawker. Anthony Federov did a more Broadway version but I'm surprisingly enjoying Garrett's performance. I'm sure some will find it boring, but I loved it. He hit the notes. And again, he didn't rawk it. Shit. I can't believe I liked it!

  • Jason Castro - "What a Day For A Daydream" (Lovin' Spoonful) 1
I have nothing against long hair, but I like my boys clean cut. I feel like he'll look soooo much better with short hair. I feel like he's high. He's talking at such a slow pace. But hey, cutie pie alert. So let's listen and give him a chance. The guitar didn't do much for me, but I like him. It's so chillax, but NOT boring. He's giving him a Jack Johnson vibe. Pamy says he's current -- I can't believe this is a 60s song. Oh and did I mention cute? and he's keeping me interested.

  • Michael Johns - "Light My Fire" (The Doors) 10
Oooh, love the accent. Love the hair. See? Clean boys rule. Physical appearance: CHECK! But he asked to judged on his voice alone so let's see. I love how his background image is a FIRE. How literal. I know The Doors have some cult following, and I'm not even part of that, but somehow I feel like he's desecrating a song. Dude, what an ending? That wasn't even half of a glory note. So since he asked to be judged on vocals alone, I fail him. or something close there.

They say he's the "plant" of this season, and I kind of agree, because Simon, Randy and Paula were short of kissing his ass. This guy just yelled his way through and didn't even hit the last note. But hey, there's always a plant. If the girls didn't exist, I'd say he'd win American Idol 7. Oh noes.

My Bottom Three
10. Michael Johns
11. Robbie Carico
12. Luke Menard

So I don't want Luke to get kicked out for the main reason that he's a cutie, but if he's gotta go, then he's got to go. HOWEVER, if he does go, please take either Michael Johns or Robbie Carico with you. I agree with Entertainment Weekly on most of their critique, except for the part where they loved Robbie Carico. But I thoroughly enjoyed it. Here's to more internet reading during the Idol season.

Over-all, tonight's performances were

Excellent: What a way to start the top 24!
0(0.0%)
Very Good: 80% fab, 20% el sucko
0(0.0%)
Good: Can we slash off 6 RIGHT now?
3(60.0%)
So-so: I was sleeping 3/4 of the time!!!
2(40.0%)
Horrible: Let's go back to Hollywood please.
0(0.0%)

And that was it for tonight. I'm loving the sexual tension between Simon and Ryan (who accidentally forgot to thank Simon at the end), and I'm really glad Idol season is back. I guess it just took a while for me to come around. I'm hoping the girls bring it tomorrow, cause I know they can do sooooo much better than the boys.
